Not sure if everything sucks because you’re depressed?
OR
That you’re depressed because everything sucks?
Depression is a challenging disorder because it can manifest in lots of different (and sneaky) ways ranging from a vague sense of unease through to suicidal thoughts. It is an emotion that can be painfully obvious to everyone or cleverly hidden away. But is it really all that clever to hide this emotion?
What about anxiety?
According to the WHO, in 2019, roughly 4% of the worlds adult population were diagnosed with some form of anxiety disorder. The wide range of different disorders that are typically lumped under the ‘anxiety umbrella’, include panic disorders, specific phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and even obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
And stress?
I have been an acupuncturist for over 30 years. In that time, I have seen thousands of patients with stress as their main complaint. Therefore, I have been witness to the positive effect acupuncture can have on stress.
In this workshop we will look at the most common organ presentations for depression, anxiety, stress, as well as overwhelm, frustration and anger. Whilst Zàng Fǔ Patterns will be our primary focus, but we will also consider Five Elements (and Archetypes), Five Spirits, and Eight Extraordinary Vessels. Throughout it all, there will be dozens of acupuncture point combinations provided. These can be used in clinic immediately if your patient’s presentation suits or adjusted slightly to fit.
What this workshop will show, is that regardless of whether the patient’s emotional turmoil is a main complaint, or part of the larger clinical picture, acupuncture can help. So, if you want to know more about treating DASS using acupuncture point combinations, then this is the workshop for you*
* DASS = Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale.
So, what will you learn?
In this two-day workshop you will be taken through a range of different APC’s to treat depression, anxiety, stress (DASS), as well as frustration, feeling overwhelmed, and anger. The goal being that you are provided with additional treatment options to consider for your patients. More tools for the toolbox as it were. Tools you can apply in clinic immediately!

The Seven Emotions (Qī Qíng/七情) According to Chinese Medicine (Foundational) In this free workshop participants will get a foundational look at the seven emotions (Qī Qíng/七情). This will include a very brief history before discussing each of the seven emotions which are anger, joy, pensiveness, worry, sadness/grief, fear and shock. Part of the discussion will include organ and element relationships, diagnosis and acupuncture point combinations used to treat. The workshop will conclude with an introduction to David’s future workshops, courses and textbook on mental health conditions separate to/including the seven emotions.
At the end of this workshop, you will:
- Be more proficient in identifying the different types of depression, anxiety and stress (DASS) seen in clinic
- Understand the various forms of diagnoses that can apply for each of the mental and emotional disorders discussed; and then how to treat those disorders
- Have a greater insight into the importance of acupuncture point combinations
- Feel like you now have the tools to construct your own acupuncture point combinations for the mental and emotional disorders discussed
- Have been taken through Chinese medicine concepts that are new to you; something you had forgotten you knew and are therefore reminded of again; or for consolidating knowledge already known
- Have a better understanding of a range of different Chinese medicine/philosophy concepts that tie in with the treatment of patients with the mental and emotional disorders discussed.
