Developing confidence in maternity acupuncture

Examine the potential and reality of providing treatment with Debra Betts

At the end of this course participants will have an understanding of how acupuncture can be used to provide care to women during pregnancy and the postnatal period. In addition they will have access to information that they can use enhance their credibility with western health practitioners to create referral pathways.
During this two-day workshop we will examine acupuncture within the first, second and third trimester of pregnancy and the postnatal period • Topics for discussion will include treatment using the principles of historical Chinese medicine knowledge, the latest Western medical knowledge and the framework of treating the three treasures: jing, qi and shen • You’ll also build your awareness of red flags for referral, essential knowledge for developing credibility with and referrals to Western medical practitioners, treatments midwives see as essential, and case histories from clinical practice

Debra has a background in nursing and gradu¬ated with a Diploma in Acupuncture from the London College of Acupuncture in 1989. Re¬turning to New Zealand in 1991 she established a private practice specialising in pregnancy and women’s health care. 

She began specifically developing and teaching acupuncture courses to midwives in 1997. This led to the publication of articles on the use of acupuncture in obstetric practice in 1999 and her book “The Essential Guide to Acupuncture in Pregnancy & Childbirth” in 2006. With the completion of her PhD on the use of acupuncture in threatened miscarriage she is currently the Director of Postgraduate Programmes for a masters blended learning course through New Zealand School Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine. She is also a supervisor at a hospital antenatal acupuncture clinic and lectures internationally on the use of acupuncture in obstetric care.
