When cancer patients ask for our help we face a big responsibility. Few of us feel fully prepared or fully confident in the face of this challenge, so we have a duty to constantly upgrade our skills and to fill in those knowledge gaps. Although we cannot claim to cure cancer with acupuncture we can usually improve patients’ wellbeing.
Topics for the day
Charlie Buck graduated in acupuncture from ICOM in the 80s after training in medical sciences and has practised in Chester since then. He self-studied Chinese herbs for several years and in 1988, after training with Ted Kaptchuk, became a member of the RCHM. Following a spell at the Shanghai College of TCM in 1990 he has worked at the Northern College of Acupuncture as postgraduate tutor, herb course director and senior lecturer on both the acupuncture and herb MScs. He was awarded an RCHM Fellowship in 1998 in recognition of his contribution to Chinese herbal medicine training in the UK. He is visiting lecturer and external examiner at Copenhagen’s Skolen for Akupunctur. In 2000 he was awarded an MSc for his thesis examining the scientific evaluation of TCM’s paradigms. His role as director of the Chester Clinic – for many years home to a charitable cancer help centre – led to his interest in exploring the contribution acupuncture and Chinese medicine can make to the wellbeing of patients with cancer. He scores highly in student feedback both for his command of Chinese medicine and his lively, lucid style. Course fee£75 Refunds cannot be made unless at least two weeks notice is given.
