Tony BookerTony Booker
Director of Chinese herbal medicine
Tony is spearheading the launch here at the College of a new study package for our Chinese herbal medicine training. From 2008 we will be offering (subject to vaildation) a comprehensive and flexible learning structure consisting of three courses leading to an MSc. He has been practising Chinese medicine since 1994. Initially trained as an analytical chemist, he went on to graduate in acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine and study at postgraduate level in the UK and Hangzhou, China. He is president of the RCHM and sits on the Herbal Medicines Advisory Committee (the body which advises the medicines regulators and government on herbal issues). Tony works as a practitioner in clinics in Kent and maintains his own Chinese herbal dispensary integrated within an allopathic pharmacy. In April 2007 he was appointed director of Chinese herbal medicine at this College.

 

Danny BlythDanny Blyth
Module leader for herbs and formulae
Danny studied herbs and acupuncture at this College. He has a background in horticulture, and still grows many Chinese herbs. He practises in Cheltenham and the Cotswolds where he also teaches tai chi and qi gong.

 

 

John HicksJohn Hicks
John is joint principal and co-founder of the College. He graduated from the College of Traditional Acupuncture, Leamington Spa in 1974, then underwent postgraduate clinical training in Nanjing in 1986 and trained in herbs with Ted Kaptchuk in 1987. John is author of several books on acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine and he teaches herbs and formulae on our Chinese herbal medicine courses.

 

Greg LampertGreg Lampert
Course development officer
Greg trained in acupuncture at the College of Traditional Acupuncture, Leamington Spa, then undertook a clinical TCM integration course. He trained in herbs at the London Academy of Oriental Medicine. In 1998 and 2000 he travelled to Hangzhou to further his clinical training and he has returned there many times since, as group leader. He teaches Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture at the College and he practises in the College clinic.

 

Peter LinthwaitePeter Linthwaite
Module leader for research and reflective practice
Peter studied psychology at the London School of Economics before working in research at the Health Education Authority and the Economic and Social Research Council. He trained at the College and currently practises acupuncture at the College clinic in Reading and in Henley-on-Thames.

 

 

Ken LloydKen Lloyd
Module leader for clinical practice
Ken graduated from the International College of Oriental Medicine, East Grinstead in 1983 and studied Chinese herbal medicine at the School of Chinese Herbal Medicine. He received a Certificate in Clinical Practice of Acupuncture from the International Acupuncture Training Centre in Nanjing in 1991. He underwent clinical training in herbal medicine in Nanjing in 1993 and subsequently in Kunming, Hangzhou and Chengdu. In 1994 he became a council member of the RCHM, and for a time he was its president. Ken helped set up the Immune Development Trust specialising in the treatment of HIV/AIDS and has worked at the London Lighthouse, treating people affected by this disease.

 

David WilsonDavid Wilson
Module leader for differentiation and treatment of disease
David began his career with a BSc in engineering, becoming a senior manager reporting to the board of directors of BUPA before embarking on his studies in Chinese medicine at the College. He also studied a nine-month paediatrics course and has a diploma in tui na massage. He is used to treating children in his practice in Buckinghamshire using herbs, acupuncture and tui na. David also practises tai chi, qi gong and meditation and teaches paediatrics here at the College.

 

Zhi Hua GaoZhi Hua Gao
Clinical supervisor
Zhi Hua graduated with a bachelors degree in TCM from Nanjing University of TCM in 1994. She then started work in Nanjing Red Cross Hospital alongside western doctors where until 1997 she held the position of physician and junior surgeon. In 1998 she studied English at the Matthew Bolton College in Birmingham and through this study and by practising TCM in the UK she has become fluent in English language. Zhi Hua has been a member of the Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine since 1998, becoming vice president in 2005. She has been a TCM practitioner in the UK for ten years and runs a busy practice in Bedfordshire.

 

Christopher HedleyChristopher Hedley
Christopher teaches phytochemistry. He trained in western herbal medicine at the School of Herbal Medicine, now the School of Phytotherapy, in Sussex. He has been in private practice for 20 years and has taught herbal medicine at all levels. He is a guest lecturer at the Scottish School of Herbal Medicine and he designed the experiential aspects of their course. He was chair of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists postgraduate education board for four years. He currently teaches herbal medicine on the degree course at Westminster University and is a clinical tutor for that course.

 

Joska RamelowJoska Ramelow
Joska teaches pharmacology. He came to London in 1980 to study Chinese medical therapies under Master Lee, a Chinese medical practitioner, teacher and chartered physiotherapist from Kuala Lumpur. After further study with Giovanni Maciocia and on the Journal of Chinese Medicine course, he went on to train in Japanese herbal medicine, which was followed by the first ever degree course in herbal medicine at Middlesex University. His work in acupuncture and herbal therapy has stretched over 20 years now, and he has established academic links to Keio University hospital, the foremost medical school for herbal research in Japan.

 

Lisa SmithLisa Smith
Lisa works as the nutritional therapist in a prominent acupuncture clinic in London, where she specialises in infertility. She has a keen interest in the relationship between food and common childhood development and behavioural disorders such as autism, ADHD and dyslexia and works closely with local schools in this context. Lisa regularly gives weaning and post-natal nutrition talks as part of the National Childbirth Trust's mother and baby courses.

 

Edmond Williams
Research tutor
Edmond is a Chinese herbal medicine practitioner with extensive experience in scientific research. After completing a PhD in physics he gained experience as a teacher and supervisor for PhD students at St Andrews University. After some years he re-trained in acupuncture, qi gong and herbal medicine and is now able to use these skills teaching and supervising on our Chinese herbal medicine MSc.

Guest lecturers

Philip Hochhauser
Philip graduated from the International College of Oriental Medicine, East Grinstead in 1986 and has worked at the London School of Acupuncture and TCM as a teacher since 1988, an acupuncture clinical supervisor since 1990 and herbal clinical supervisor since 1995. He has worked at the Immune Development Trust specialising in the treatment of HIV/AIDS and in a pain clinic at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London from 1987 until 1990. Philip also completed postgraduate study in Nanjing in 1990, in India from 1982 to the present, and in Vietnam.

 

Jin Huide
Jin is a herbal practitioner as were his mother, grandfather and great grandfather before him. Since 1979 he has been both the head of the interpreters' group and a doctor of Chinese medicine at the International Acupuncture Training Centre of Nanjing University of TCM. He has learned from many famous doctors in Nanjing. In 1993/94 he worked as a doctor of Chinese medicine in Denmark and he currently practises acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and tui na in London. He is the translator of A Guide to Chinese Herbs and Formulae and the Churchill Livingstone book Clinical Manual of Herbal Medicine and Acupuncture.

 

Nick LampertNick Lampert
Nick began his working life as an academic in a field quite unrelated to Chinese medicine, enjoyed that for a while, then felt increasingly constrained by it. After a classic mid-life crisis he left to study acupuncture at the International College of Oriental Medicine and the London School of Acupuncture and TCM. Later he studied herbs at the School of Chinese Herbal Medicine in London and has been to Nanjing twice for additional training, first in acupuncture and then in herbs. Within his herbal practice he most often treats skin disease, respiratory conditions, and digestive disorders.

 

Shulan TangShulan Tang
Shulan is a Chinese doctor of acupuncture and herbal medicine. She studied for five years at Nanjing University of TCM and for a further three years at the Beijing University of TCM obtaining a Masters degree specialising in Chinese herbal prescriptions and gynaecology. She returned to Nanjing in 1987 to work for four years at the Jiangsu Hospital where she became the physician in charge of the hospital. Since 1991 she has been practising in Manchester. She is currently the academic executive of the Association of TCM and a fellow member of the RCHM.
