College of Integrated Chinese Medicine - Acupuncture Courses

Diploma in Paediatric Acupuncture

Bamboo drawing

A three part course starting in January 2012 at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine. This is a comprehensive course in paediatric acupuncture. The course is the result of many years of development by Julian Scott. You will be provided with handouts, a 1600 page manual and given coursework assignments. Clinical work, photos and videos of clinical situations will be included. You will have the opportunity to bring patients to the College. This course will deepen your understanding of acupuncture and enrich your adult practice, as well as enabling you to treat children and babies.
It will also help practitioners of herbal medicine and tuina develop their skills in diagnosing and treating children.

Structure of the course

The first part consists of four days and is for those who wish to learn about the treatment of children, but who do not wish to make paediatrics a major part of their practice. There will be an introduction to the main differences between treating children and adults.

The second part consists of a further eight days, covering some of the major children’s problems in detail. This part will include two days of Western medical paediatrics.

The third part consists of a further six days. It builds on the first two parts and goes into the treatment of children in greater depth. It is intended for those who wish to
develop their skills and for those who may wish to start a children’s clinic.

Teachers

Julian Scott has been treating children for 35 years. He first studied at ICOM, and then studied further in China. His translation of Chinese texts became the foundation for the first edition of Acupuncture in the Treatment of Children. Subsequent editions incorporated more clinical
observations on how the traditional theories had to be adapted to Western conditions. He co-founded children’s clinics in England, Israel and the USA.

Teresa Barlow has been treating children for nearly 20 years. She first studied at ICOM, and then studied further in China. Together with Julian, she is the author of the 3rd edition of Acupuncture in the Treatment of Children, and co-founded children’s clinics in Israel and the USA.

Dr. Stephen Gascoigne qualified in medicine in the UK in 1976. He worked in hospital and general practice for over six years and during this time became interested in holistic medicine. He trained in acupuncture in Shanghai, China and subsequently in Chinese herbal medicine in London. He is the author of The Clinical Medicine Guide - A Holistic Perspective and The Chinese Way to Health. He now divides his time between a busy practice in Bath, England and West Cork, Ireland.
