Event description
Rachel Peckham and Jacqueline Mangold

A two-day seminar introducing the theory and practice of the NADA auricular protocol with Rachel Peckham and Jacqueline Mangold at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine, Reading.

This course explores the treatment and management of individuals with substance misuse problems using the non-diagnostic NADA protocol as well as traditional acupuncture. The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association (NADA) was set up in the USA in 1985 to promote the education and training of clinicians in the use of acudetox through the NADA five-point ear detox protocol.

Topics for the day

Over the two days we will look at the treatment of energetic imbalances caused by the misuse of alcohol, street and prescription drugs. We will discuss the application and limitations of the NADA protocol, locate and practice the needling of the five NADA auricular points – as well as other commonly used ear points – and look at the health and safety implications of treating clients in a group setting. We will also briefly discuss the criteria to consider for setting up an auricular acupuncture service in NHS/NTA and prison service settings.

Furthermore we will explore the most commonly treated problems during rehab-ilitation from drug and alcohol misuse from a TCM and Five Element viewpoint with the help of specific case histories. Last, but not least, we will look at the management problems and complex needs of this special client group.

Optional clinical training for NADA qualification

Individuals wishing to obtain a NADA qualification to work in drug and alcohol services in the UK can do so within a year of this workshop by attending a separate clinical training at a cost of £150. This entails providing approximately 20 supervised treatments in 5 to 10 one-hour clinical sessions at the Core Trust in London during the morning ear acupuncture group (10 to 11 am).

Suitable for qualified practitioners and third year students. Places are limited to allow for the individual supervision of participants.

Rachel Peckham, Lic Ac, MBAcC is a trustee and trainer for NADA UK and former clinical manager of complementary therapies at the Core Trust, London. After graduating from the CTA, Rachel went on to postgraduate training in TCM and holds an MSc from Westminster University which includes a dissertation on the impact of the NADA protocol at the Core Trust. She practises in London and lectures in the therapeutic relationship module at the LCTA.

Jacqueline Mangold Adv Lic Ac, MBAcC is clinical manager of complementary therapies at the Core Trust, London, and assessor for NADA UK. After graduating from CTA, she went on to postgraduate training in Five Element acupunc-ture, TCM and, more recently, Japanese acupuncture. She supervises a team of volunteers (body acupuncturists and other complementary therapists) as well as NADA trainees at the Core Trust and runs a private practice in Oxford, where she is also an active member of the Acupuncture for Childbirth Team (ACT).
