Event description
Jennie Longbottom

An introduction to the use of muscle trigger points in the management of acute and chronic pain, with Jennie Longbottom at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine, Reading.

This two-day workshop is designed to introduce the use of trigger point acupuncture for the management of myofascial pain. The course will cover the physiology of pain with emphasis on the diagnosis, management and physiological effects of trigger point needling on muscle and connective tissue.

The course has a highly practical content and will allow delegates to achieve enhanced anatomy, physiology and palpatatory skills when treating cervical spine, thoracic spine and lumbar spine on the first day. The second day will cover the shoulder, hip and pelvis.

The course will:
  • introduce the concepts underlying the development of myofascial trigger points and myofascial pain
  • introduce the participant to the dysfunctional muscle and the physiological response
  • introduce the neurophysiology of muscle pain, referred pain and the concept of the functional motor unit with its diverse spread
  • develop an awareness of palpatory and manual skills in the identification of trigger points
  • develop a programme of treatment management, which will include diagnosis, myofascial release and needling with appropriate stretching regimes
  • identify biomechanical and predisposing factors, which predispose and maintain myofascial pain
  • outline the essential component of myofascial trigger point reduction in chronic pain management.

Detailed pre-course document available on request.
