Practical ways to use Chinese medicine to help cancer patients, with Steve Gascoigne at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine, Reading.

Cancer is one of the commonest diseases in the Western world. One in three of us will suffer from it, and one in four of us will die from it. We may see many patients in our clinic who have received a diagnosis of cancer. How can we support them in their search for health and help them through their treatments with chemotherapy and surgery?

Chinese medicine gives us many tools – acupuncture, herbal medicine, meditation, qi gong, diet – all of which can greatly benefit people at all stages of their diagnosis and treatment.

This seminar will focus on practical support for our patients as they seek a path back towards health and vitality. You are encouraged to bring case histories to share with participants.

Dr Stephen Gascoigne MB, ChB, CAc (Shanghai), Dip CHM originally trained in Western medicine and worked in hospitals and as a GP. His interest in complementary therapies grew, and eventually he trained in China as an acupuncturist, graduating in 1985 then in Chinese herbal medicine in London with Tinh Thong Nguyen, a third generation Vietnamese practitioner. He now practises acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in Bath, Somerset and West Cork, Ireland. He discusses diet, exercise, relaxation and meditation practices with patients to develop a plan to relieve symptoms and maximise health. His book The Chinese Way to Health is an introduction for the general public. The Clinical Medicine Guide (and related distance-learning study guide) and The Prescribed Drug Guide are for practitioners. Steve also writes regularly for journals including a column for the online Chinese medicine journal chinesemedicinetimes.com.
