Event description
Neil Quinton

This course will examine the treatment of people with severe and enduring mental health problems from a TCM perspective. Special attention will be given to pattern identification and the common pathomechanisms with which these patients present.

The treatment of chronic anxiety, depression and insomnia will be covered, and case studies of patients diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder will be used to highlight guiding principles and illustrate treatment strategies and progression.

We will focus on lifestyle factors including the crucial role that diet, relaxation, and exercise can play in empowering our patients and aiding their recovery.

Guidance will also be given on what one should expect and how best to proceed when engaging with mainstream psychiatric services.

Neil Quinton , MBAcC MRCHM studied acupuncture at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine and Chinese herbal medicine at the London College of Traditional Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Since graduating he has undertaken further studies in written and spoken Chinese, and has a special interest in the treatment of psychiatric illness with acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. He has been working as an acupuncturist as part of mainstream mental health services in Walsall for the last seven years. In 2008, in partnership with researcher Dr Helen Rogers, Walsall Service User Empowerment, Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council Social Care and Inclusion, and Walsall and Dudley NHS Trust, he has undertaken a year-long project seeking to examine the potential role for acupuncture in the management of psychosis.
