Event description
Charlie Buck

Learn how insights from the past and present can help us develop our clinical skills with Charlie Buck at the College of Integrated Chinese Medicine, Reading.

This seminar seeks to define mastery in Chinese medicine, to identify the skills that traditional masters have and how we can more knowingly begin to acquire them ourselves in ways that are authentically our own. After discussing traditional learning and thinking styles expected of master practitioners we survey some contemporary clinical skills such as patient rapport and belief plus insights drawn from modern studies of skilled biomedical doctors.

Topics for the day
• Defining mastery in oriental arts
• Early historical ideas as the wellspring of high-level practice
• Language and cultural issues in relation to understanding Chinese medicine
• Belief, cognitive and ‘magic’ issues in clinical practice
• Discussion of issues arising

'The only seven-hour seminar in which I’ve not felt like going to sleep. A great combination of gravity and impishness! Good to hear a clever person talking. Wide-ranging, intelligent and thought-provoking… it will stay with me.' PP

'Thoughtful and inspiring on the ways to improve my clinical practice … the stories and anecdotes were memorable, short, relevant and illustrated the points very well – excellent.' RN

'Entertaining, interesting and always relevant. Honest and sincere delivery with good humour. Really inspirational, Charlie’s a great model and mentor.' PS

'Lots of wit with the wisdom.' GH

'Really glad I came – I feel inspired again!' EI

Studying and practising Chinese herbs since graduating from ICOM in 1984 Charlie Buck was among the first handful of UK CHM pioneers. He went on to study with Ted Kaptchuk and at the Shanghai College of TCM. In 1993 Charlie was invited to teach and direct the UK’s first formal acupuncture college-based CHM training at the NCA in York where he remains a senior academic and research supervisor. A skilled and lucid communicator, regularly teaching internationally, Charlie has the knack of conveying the essence of many of Chinese medicine’s profundities in simple and engaging ways so that you leave with a renewed and re-inspired love for this medicine.
